Can you ride your bike while drunk??

I'm 18 and I can't ride a bike. How do I teach myself how to ride a bike?

  • I just bought a bike today from Walmart. It's the second bike I had in my life. I tried to learn how to ride a bike when I was 10, but I gave up after a few days. I got an urge to learn how to ride a bike when I was 16, but I got my driver's license soon after that and I never tried to learn how to ride a bike. Now, with the gas prices going up, and to stay fit, I want to start riding a bike. I tried riding it in an empty parking lot (similar to how I learned to drive), but I could not keep my balance longer than a few seconds. Also, is it legal to ride my bike on the sidewalk in New Jersey?

  • Answer:

Find a grassy park or golf course. Wear some blue jeans. Bring a friend. Start with the bicycle seat height too low at first--set it so that your legs reach the ground while seated. Later, you will set it high so that your legs straighten while pedaling, but save that for next week. ;) Get the friend to push you very quickly while you're upon the bike, on the nice soft grassy area. TRY TO GO FAST! Slow bikes are nearly impossible to balance. So, a bit of speed helps. Landing on the grass won't really hurt, so this can let you go fast enough to balance easily. In all 50 states, it is legal to ride upon the sidewalk any time you feel endangered by the car traffic. It is also legal to ride upon the sidewalk whenever the cars are going fast and they have only one lane each direction. It is not a good idea to ride upon a sidewalk because many cyclists are hit by cars as the cars suddenly turn right and drive across the sidewalk and into a parking lot or side road. So, it is usually much safer to ride on the street. A neighborhood street is usually better than a major street. Judge the desperation (mood) of the drivers, and do always make eye contact with a driver who might turn right--right over you. If a car hits you from the side, it is considered that the cyclist ran out in front of the car. However, if a car hits you from behind (very rare!) then it is nearly certain to make you a lot of money. Most car drivers know that rear-ending someone can cost a fortune. This is another reason not to ride on the sidewalk. However, if you're sharing a lane with the cars, make sure it is wide enough on the right to allow you some room. If not, take the whole lane, but use a rear "blinkie" and follow a somewhat erratic (not quite straight) path so that you're easier to notice by the car driver. Have fun!

the best way to learn balance and steering is to start with a kids scooter. the 2 wheeled kind. you can start off as slow as you want with one foot on the platform and one foot on the ground, shove and get yourself rolling, put both feet onthe platform, steer a little. YOu will get the hang of 2 wheel balance fast. When you feel good about it, go back to the bike and lower the seat so your feet can easily get to the gournd have someone push you off, you will be able to steer and balance, next try pedaling....

buy a helmet and some elbow/knee pads.

best way to start is NOT to use the pedals. Just try rolling down a slight incline/hill and get your balance 1st. Once this is achived then pedal. GOOD LUCK ! ps WEAR A HELMET - DONT RISK IT !

it takes a few falls to ride a bike, but that's the fun part about learning. to learn balance, have someone hold you uhmmm.."the thing you sit on the bike" while you peddal to keep you balanced, also do not use a high speed gear (big at the pedals small at the wheel)you will come to realize that the biggest problem is the start because as soon as you gain speed you also gain balance. And remember when you ride the thing "DO NOT LOOK AT THE WHEEL" look straigt ahead at about 10 m (30 ft) in front of you.

Just get on it and ride. You can do it. Nothing is legal here in NJ!

i have no idea about the legality of riding on New Jersey sidewalks, but to ride, just get on and go, its that simple, one foot on ground, other foot on the peddle start to push and then other foot up, peddle and keep going, the balance is all in your head, there is nothing to it, just focus on the peddles and where you are going

You say you tried to learn when you were 10 and gave up after a few days. And now at 18 you keep losing your balance. Losing your balance is normal at first, but in just a few tries you should be able to keep your balance for short distances. This will then be lengthend as your sense of balance developes. In a few days you should be able to ride long distances without balance problems. Human balance is achieved by the Inner Ear. When something is wrong it will cause difficulty in achieving balance. Although your sense of balance might be good when walking or driving a car, bike riding requires a heightened sense of balance. Something as simple as the drain tubes not draining properly can affect your balance. Since bicycle accidents can cause severe, long lasting injuries and even death, I suggest you see an Ear, Nose and Throat(ENT) specialist for an evaluation. If the Dr. says everything is good, then get an experienced bike rider to assist and teach you. Don't let a foolish sense of pride cause you to be seriously hurt or killed.

Maybe you should put training wheels on at first-it might look silly, but hey, you'll probably be able to keep your balance better-Good Luck

Get a hold of a local tandem club and see if you can find somebody that will let you ride on the back for a bit to get used to the balance and pedaling thing.
