How To Buy Road Rash?

Experienced Cyclists!: How do you take care of road rash?

  • I've been cycling for about nine months and Monday I had my first serious crash. Road rash from my knee to ankle. I just want to know any tricks of the trade for taking care of road rash.

  • Answer:

    Clean the wound out thoroughly, and I mean CLEAN. Get in there, scrub out the wound. Once the wound is clean, apply a liberal amount of antiseptic cream, something like Neosporin. Then cover the wound with a non-stick gauze dressing. Tape it in place, or cover it with elastic netting that you can get at your local surgical supply store. Clean and redress the wound 2-3 times a day. -or- Once the wound is clean, apply the neosporin and cover the wound with Tegaderm. It's a unique sort of dressing that completely seals off the wound, yet allows it to breathe. If applied correctly, you can go for days without changing the bandage (and you can even take a shower with it on). Once your wound has completely healed, you can use vitamin b gel to help minimize the scarring.

Pretty much just have to suck it up. However, make sure you clean it out really well with antibacterial soap or solution. Apply an ointment 2 or 3 times daily (again antibacterial). Some people wrap it loosely, I myself would rather just have the ointment and no wrap b/c when you unwrap it tends to pull healing skin away from wound.

hopefully the bike survived intact sans any damage, but if not check frame alignment, any cracks on the frame, bent rims, crankset, ect..with bike costing so much these days it's worth it , the person above with the long response gave good suggestion for road rash :)

I agree wholeheartedly with long_duk. I would just like to add that it will heal more quickly (and be less painful) if you do not allow it to produce a scab. This is the reason you keep the area moist and clean.
