How much cash do you carry around on a normal day?

Low tech, low fi, low on cash bike trip?

• So I lost my job, my car died, and I wanna get outta town. Should I break down and buy some panniers for my bike or save what little cash I have & strap my milk crate on the rack, load it n' my day pack down, and go??? Alternately, is it legal to hire a team of hobos to ride along and carry my gear?

  Hobos don't like being called hobos anymore. Something about political correctness. In any case, the daily caddie fee for "bums" has gone through the roof just like so many other costs in this economy. Non-English speaking companions, though, are still a bit more affordable if conversation isn't a requirement. Milk crates aren't practical for a long haul. The center of gravity will be too high, and their bulk will rob the aerodynamic benefits of your team kit and freshly shaven legs. A set of nashbar panniers won't set you back much, and you can regain some of the cost via craigslist or pass them to your children to use as backpacks.
