Why astroturf could not be used for cricket pitches to have identical playing conditions everywhere?

astroturf for cricket

Answer:
I played on a few artificial pitches in my youth and they are not actually a bad idea at club / youth level. Low maintenance, can be played on constantly and allow more play in rainy conditions. In fact it would be a good idea to put one in every public park in England. The only problem is that they tend not to reward truly fast bowlers and big spinners of the ball. At the highest level artificial pitches would take a lot out of the game in terms of the varied conditions that make each game different .

I agree with Shantam G. Having the same types of pitches all over the world destroy the variable conditions of the game, it would be so one dimensional, there would be no chance of anyone having any impact on the game. Not to mention playing on AstroTurf would be hazardous (a bit like playing on a dropped in pitches really), you'd slide all over the place, which would lead to damaged ankles (etc) which is especially bad for a bowler.

It will never happen, think of how dangerous astroturf is to run on, players would reluctantly slide for the ball, because they could get seriously injured !!. Bowlers risk serious injury everytime they run into bowl ! Why would you want identical conditions around the world, it would make cricket boring and predictable, and it would take great spinners out of the game !!. Think about it, how much is the ball going to spin on astroturf ??, not a lot is the answer ! The plus side would be that England would do well, they play spin poorly, and they rely on good fast bowlers !, so a fast astroturf pitch would suit them. and MAYBE just MAYBE England can win away consistently !

Beauty of the game would be destroyed.

It is not sensible to have the same type of pitch everywhere.... This'll destroy the joy of varied conditions of cricket wickets all over the world......Like the unbelievably fast Perth, to the spinner's heaven FirozShah Kotla

The interest in cricket lies in how the ball will behave after pitching. Astroturf will make it so predictable.Just think how it will be if the bowlers are to bowl only full tosses.
