What are some of the cricketing superstitions from around the world?
-
Many cricketers have superstitions. Australians tend to be wary of the number 87 because it is 13 short of 100. English cricketers are more suspicious of the number 111. I don't know why, only that it's known as Nelson. It must be Lord Nelson's something??? Wonder what it could be!! Can you list a few other superstitions???

Answer:
No idea why these people do these things but I am sure they would be superstitous in other parts of their lives. •Sanath Jayasuriya clearly pats his pad and adjusts his helmet after every ball he faces. •Mahela Jayawardena always kisses his bat after every stroke. •Sachin Always wears his left pad first, and still uses the old buckle type pads. •Steve Waugh always carried a handkerchief given to him by his late grandfather. •Jimmy Ammarnath also carried a Red handkerchief in his pocket while fielding. •Ganguly always carries a photo of Guruji while batting. •Atherton would never give an interview if he was 'not out' overnight.

The figure 111 is called the Nelson number after Admiral Nelson. The reason may be hypothetical (or true..I don't know) but its a legend that says he was left with one eye, one arm and one ball at the end of his naval career. Another piece of interesting fact is that 111 represents the three stumps without bails which means OUT in cricket, hence considered a bad omen. There are a few other legends that I am not aware of. Superstitions in cricket has been really well described by mrjinx. Most of the times the superstitions are considered as "top secret" and is privy only to the members of the team.

87 as it is 13 short of 100, it is considered as an ill omen by the Aussies. But sometime, some acts players perform and it proves lucky, then they keep repeating that particular act. Like red kerchief worn on their head by certain cricketers. Throwing the ball to the bowler through certain player or through a certain set of players in a specifc order. Alan Knot had the habit of kissing the bails whenever he came to bat. Once when Alan Knot approached the stumps, Farookh Engineer removed the bail and in that match Alan Knot got out soon. Pakistan players kissing the earth as a mark of thanks giving when they had completed a hundred
Often team members don't move when a player from their team is nearing a landmark. Another individual one - John Wright would never shave during a test match.

111 is supposed to represent the devil's pitchfork.
Mahela Jayawardana always run to other crease even if it is a boundary. He never wait on the crease after even it was a six or four. Tharanga Paranawithana is the man who tend to kiss bat for every ball, not MJ.
