Why should people earning over £50,000 a year get child benefit? They don't really need it.?

Answer one has a good point, the cost of administrating and means testing benefits, checking up on cheats, etc might be more than would be saved by introducing a cut-off point. I know loads of people who diddle their working tax credits by not doing overtime during their assessment period, for example. The simplest, and fairest, solution is to abolish the child benefits altogether and use the money saved to raise tax thresholds so no one on min wage pays a penny in income tax.

When we get married and have KIDS we take a financial hit, weather we make $60 000 or $100 000. We make more than $84.000 and we still can't put anything away for retirement. Weather we make $20 000 or $100 000... as a society we must help these KIDS, we do it for LOVE. We live in a society that haas a lot of greedy people and a lot of them don't really care about people's children, we have enough money to support every kid in this World. Here in the United states, education is for the rich, why ? I believe that every Kid should get a great education. We worry about OIL and GOLD, big deal!!!! if I make just a $10 000 a year and help a kid go to school or to see a Doctor, I will be happy that my money went toward a child. What makes me mad is that our money goes to finance the War against innocent people to protect the rich, that makes me really angry, when it comes to Supporting KIDS, I will do it even if it costs me my life, because I was a KID, I know how it feels to be loved, it is all about LOVE, not OIL not GOLD.

Suckin on the system tell the authorities of people you know who do that. Poor familes are struggling for these filthy pigs to get the benfits they don't deserve.

Universility of things like Child benefit actually make sense to be honest. The cost of having a bureacracy in order actually means test everyone for eligibility would cost as much if not more. and invariably people that need the support would also fall through the cracks in the bureacracy Plus certain things should e universal, such as healthcare and support of children.

i think they put a cap on child benefit and earnings ? i think the idea is that the money is in the needs of the child only, not taking aacount of the parents wealth., not all well off people take good care of their kids so much. they would have higher mortgage, council tax and bills, plus they would be paying more tax than lower earners. i agree more child benefit should be given to poorest families but higher earners can struggle sometimes too.
