Is it difficult to live in France as an immigrant?

Why do some Europeans exaggerate the presence of Muslims in the US? Why not diversify your immigrant pool more?

  • Please stay relevant to the context of this question. From time to time, I hear this rhetoric from Europeans about how Muslims are ''going to start or have the same problems of not acculturating'' in the US. I especially heard this around the 9/11 mosque story last year. Don't you realize that even if they didn't assimilate or acculturate (which they actually do), it wouldn't really matter since they are so little of the population? Look at these stats below. 53% of immigrants in the US are from Latin America. Another 2% are from Canada. About 5% are from the West Indies. Basically, 60% are from the western hemisphere. Those being westerners (fellow virtually entirely traditionally Christian and western European language speaking people). 28% is from Asia. Most of which comes from 5 countries: The Philippines, India, China, South Korea and Vietnam. With the exception of India and to a lesser degree the Philippines, there aren't many Muslims in these countries. I highly doubt 15% of Indians are Muslim like they are in India too based on who I've met. Of the remaining 12%, another 4% is from eastern Europe/Russia/Greece. Few of the Russians are Muslim and the only Muslim group of all these people are Bosnians/Albanians. 3% are from Sub-Saharan African. 1% is from western Europe. I'd imagine 2/3 of Sub-Saharan Africans Christian/Animist because many come from former British colonies. The French colonies like Senegal and the Ivory Coast are much more Muslim. Like Indians, there is definitely a disproportionately low amount of Muslims from Nigeria (the largest sending country in this region). Only 4% are from Middle Eastern and North African countries. And two of the largest groups from these regions are Lebanese Catholics and Israeli Jews. So Arab Muslims/Iranians/Turks may only add up to 3% of immigrants in the US. Even if you add 1/3 (1%) of Sub-Saharan African Muslims and a half a percent from Asians, they are only 4.5% of our immigrants. The US is 12% foreign born. That means that only 1.67 million Muslim immigrants are in the US out of an overall population of 310 million people. Even if you add up their second and third generations born here, the number is minimal. My point is how can you compare this to France, the Netherlands, the UK or countries where Muslims are the majority or close to the majority of immigrants and are a clearly recognizable percentage of the population? Is it a matter of western Europeans thinking that because Muslim immigrants come there in high droves, they must to the US too? The fact is we don't take many Muslim immigrants and the few we do are usually not from Northwest Africa. Those are the primary groups who don't want to acculturate. The Arabs we take are much more likely to be from the Middle East/Egypt and are more likely to be educated (since they arrive under professional status or are given family sponsorship from someone who was a professional). In contrast to Europe, Arabs here are much more educated than the average American. The French and Dutch get mad when people saying they are discriminative for making restrictions on wearing of burqas and niqabs. Why not just look to take immigrants from different countries? People will probably call your government discriminative for that too. But at least you won't have to deal with the assimilation issues. There are loads of Latin Americans who move to the US knowing no English. People from countries like Mexico, El Salvador and Honduras willingly dangerously and illegally cross the border knowing they'll live as undocumented second class citizens here. Why don't your governments and businesses start recruiting there? The Euro and Pound are worth more for their remittances and transnationals and your immigrant pool will be more willing to assimilate.
