Why is it so difficult to get a non-sales oriented job if you are trying to get out of that field indefinitely?

Having worked in both retail and customer service, I seem to find it an extreme uphill battle to get any kind of work that does NOT include sales and/or customer service. Why is it now so difficult to even get a labor type job just because my previous experience is in retail sales and (telephone) customer service?

Inertia. Sales jobs are high turnover and the always need warm bodies. Retail too.
