What do you do when stranded on a deserted Island?

• My class is reading "Lord of the Flies" and we have to do a project, "Water Island" where we are in groups. One group has to come up with ideas for Recreation, Jobs, etc. My group has to come up with costumes, food and customs. I`m having trouble with the customs part. If we were all really stranded on a deserted island what type of customs would we practice? Does anyone have any ideas? I`m confused on the matter, but the few customs we have come up with is to have a meeting every day at the start and end of each day, each as a family and that`s basically it. So, my question is, what sort of customs/new traditions can we start on our island? We`re supposed to leave most of our traditions/customs of our "real" life behind and come up with all new ones. yet, I`m drawing a blank. Any ideas for customs?? Thanks. =D

  You've got a good start with the 'meet twice a day' rule. Think about what kind of customs people have in other places, most customs are based on social status. Who is in charge on this island? Does he get to wear anything special to set him apart? Do other peoples costumes tell what their social status is? Do you have to address each other in different ways? For meals, do people in charge get to eat first? Do they get to sit in special places? Are there certain foods for holidays, or foods reserved for only important people? Do you special ways of remembering your history? Are stories about your past written down or only told orally? Who gets to tell them? - thats a pretty important job. How are laws made? Are there rules for voting, how many people have to vote, or if the leader can overrule a vote? Who keeps track of laws? Have fun!
