Why do people make fun of male nurses?

• I want to become a nurse practitioner and out of all the people who know one friend said only gay males are nurses because her mom is a nurse and at her job there is only one male nurse and he is gay. So she just thinks all male nurses are. Its very immature of her. Then my best friend dad doesnt think guys should be nurses. He thinks becoming a doctor is better than being a nurse. I would like to be a doctor but I am not about to deal with medical school. Thats to much stress. Now its getting to the point where I dont want to tell people what I want to be.

People make fun of it because it's an old joke that a man doing something traditionally associated with women becomes more feminine himself. Men tend to prize masculinity, virility, and fertility. To do something that diminishes any of these traits is seen as the same as 'lowering' themselves to the perceived lower status of a woman. It's an age-old joke and I doubt it will ever die. Just say 'haters gonna hate' and go be a nurse. Help people, be happy, and screw 'em. Who knows? Your medical knowledge could save their life someday.
