What is the American Dream?

What is the new "American Dream?"?

  • As a middle-class WASP male in my mid 50's, I have a view of the "American Dream" as: wife, two kids, dog, cat, three bedroom house with two car garage in the suburbs with two cars, maybe a small boat. Good schools the kids could walk to that teach my kids skills they can use in life. Safe streets and places for people to play and enjoy the outdoors. I'd say I have lived the American Dream. Not sure this is the current generation of 20 to 40-year-olds idea of what the dream should be. Like to hear from the younger generations: "What is the American Dream?"

  • Answer:

I think it is roughly the same, except many younger people don't mind the city. I also think that career and social impact are important. People want to leave a legacy and do something with their work lives about which they are passionate and thus successful, and balance it with family. I am 27 African-American college grad.

You wanna' know MY American Dream? Not living my life according to the plans society has laid before me. I want to travel. I don't want to be stuck in one place for very long. If I had to get married and settle in one town for the rest of my life w/ two kids, my wife, and a dog...I would probably kill myself. Most importantly...my "American Dream" is to leave this stupid country for one a little less...sh*tty?...and a lil' less complicated...

Interesting question, Rod. I am also a mid-50s WASP and my career-minded daughter recently told me that the idea of getting married and living in the suburbs with a minivan and 2.5 kids made her sick.

One of the beauties of living in a generally free society is that each individual has the freedom to pursue his or her own dreams and live life as he or she sees fit but not in which that violates the freedom of another. Your idea of a dream may be a "nightmare" of insurmountable debt and overburdening family responsibilities to another. Each of us defines our own purpose in life. Such purpose, or "dream," is not predicated upon any governmental, religious, or other ideological construct.

im not american but i think its either becoming famous, really rich, or looking ''great'' as in plastic surgery etc.

The American Dream is to pay off your debts.

well I feel glad for you and that at least you have the advantage to taste what is part of the "American Dream". My ideal of an American Dream is that there is no American Dream at all. Not because I havent had a taste of it, its because the taste is bitter and too realistic in order for it to become a dream. I dont believe in patriotic dreams, I believe in real life. Its amazing how freely the US is compared to other countries in the world and therefore not organized enough to deal with people in society and governmental situations.
