Are green eyes rare? How many people in the world have green eyes?

  • I hear everywhere that green eyes are rare but im still not sure. I have green eyes but I dont see why some people seem to like green eyes so much. And when I say green eyes I dont mean bluish-green or brownish-green, I mean fully green like a forest green.

The highest concentrations of green eyes tend to occur where you see a lot of racial mixing. Mixing between Europeans and North Africans / Middle Easterners along with mixing between Europeans and Native Americans tends to produce quite a high concentration of green eyed individuals. I live in the South of England and there are quite a few people with green eyes here, all but on of my cousins have them and I have them, several of my friends have them in varying shades. Most people with green eyes in the UK can trace their family line back to a Celtiberian ancestor from what is now modern day Portugal/Spain or to an Eastern European ancestor. Over here the rarest eye colour is definitely grey (really grey, not grey blue or green-grey we have quite a few with those colours) I have never seen anyone with genuinely grey eyes. The areas like Chile, South Africa, India and Mexico are largely the result of direct or neighbouring occupation by Europeans. America in general, Australia and New Zealand also have quite a high concentration of green eyed individuals which again seems to be a result of various racial mixing. You can almost trace a path through history where green eyes would have occurred and it tends to follow the path of Empires and occupations but originally I would say they were a Mediterranean trait and that still an area where it is frequently seen.

According to the encyclopedias I've looked in, about 2% of the population has green eyes. It's the rarest eye color. 8% has blue, or a variation of blue like violet or grey. I guess the rest has brown or hazel. The other day in my Psychology class, the professor wanted to do an experiment with the students and divided them up into two different groups: blue eyes and brown eyes. The blue eyed people were to go to the right of the class while the brown eyed people moved to the left side of class. I, on the other hand, stood by myself in the middle. The professor asked if I was confused and I stated simply that I had green eyes and wasn't sure where I was supposed to go. He seemed surprised that I had green eyes and said that this was the first time today that someone had green eyes. I was then reminded of a video I had seen a couple semesters ago, I believe it was called A Class Divided, where she in a sense separated the glass into two groups, blue eyed people and brown eyed people. Well what about those of us who have green eyes? I understand that blue eyes and brown eyes are more common, but is it really rare for someone to have green eyes?

They're fairly rare. They're the least common eye color. I think people like green eyes because they're unique, and they generally look very pretty. Every time I've seen green eyes they look pretty.
