What is the suicide rate in Japan?

Why do Japan has such a huge suicide rate depite of the fact they are the most brilliant?

  • They are one of the most intelligent people, technology wizards, brag about their religions...then why do they have such a high suicide rate? I feel bad.

  • Answer:

They are not the most brilliant. I think a lot of them are completely stupid. Sometimes a economics major graduate cannot even carry on an intelligent conversation about the economy. Furthermore most Japanese don't really have a religion that they believe in, bu they simply got through the robotic customs(clapping their hands and praying) just to fit in and "be Japanese". A lot of Japanese could not tell what Shinto really is or Bhuddism. Their religion was most often used by the shogun and the rest of the aristocracy to control the people and teach them to "gaman" or endure the bullcrap that they were putting them through when the fascist shogun essentially turned the common Japanese people into slaves when they made them pay taxes so high that they were only allowed to keep just enough rice to survive. All of this technology you are talking about was not invented in Japan the Japanese just stole the idea and just kept making different ideas with it until something sold. The suicide rate is high because they are miserable. Pure and simple. Why don't they smile? Well, you will get all kind of theories like "oh well it is our character" and all kind of lies that they hide behind. Kill themselves out of honor? No, I have been in Japan too much to know that is absurd. They kill themselves out of cowardice, to take the easy way out, or to get revenge against their family. Thier family has to pay big fines to Japan Railways if their dead body stops the trains. Three Icees is wrong. Those kamikazi's could not come back or they would be ordered killed. They were more afraid of their leaders than they were of death. That is the fact. And they don't work that hard either. They used to but in fact, since they have three long holidays that we do not have they in fact work less hours per year than Americans.

Intelligence and its inherent awareness of what life is all about is, if anything, a prerequisite to being suicidal. The more one knows about this world, the more likely one is to become depressed and disillusioned with it. This is where the old adage "Ignorance is bliss" stems from. I've lived and worked in Japan for two years of my life and I never encountered any "bragging about their religions." Indeed, the Japanese are very quiet and modest about most things, including religious practice (which many of them don't, btw). The increasingly high suicide rate is more a reflection of the stressful lifestyle of the average worker, especially the so-called salarymen, who routinely work 12-14 hour days. Many don't even return to their homes during the work week, staying in small city apartments instead and only returning home on weekends. It is a very hard life and often leads to alcoholism, marital discord and extreme depression. There are pros and cons to everything in life, including "success." Just something to think about....

One might argue that the more brilliant you are, the more difficult life seems. Afterall, we've all heard of geniuses who were one step away from insane. Yet, the poor and educated are usually more self-fulfilled with their life because ignorance is bliss.

#1- Pressure to excell and be the best there is can be all encompassing/overwhelming. #2- Throughout history they chose suicide over disgrace.Honor is everything. For example in WWII they where tenacious fighters and never surrendered, suicide was preferred over the disgrace of being captured. #3- Japanese people (most of them) hold honor and integrity as the pinnacle of their existence. If faced with the possibility of being dishonored, suicide is preferable.

Its thought they have a high sense of honor and duty to one's family and place a lot of pressure on themselves. When they make what they see as mistkaes they are very hard on themselves and feel such deep guilt they commit suicide. They also have a very strict work ethic and a very formal society in the business world and traditions that dont allow for a lot of stress relief that help people in other countries lighten up and have other reasons to enjoy life. All these are steretypes and not true for everyoen but it can be part of what contributes to the high suicide rate.
