Are you going to be a savior of our earth, will you set wildlife back free, will you protect the environment?

As Alison Green states 'Regarding the question about zoos, I think we must oppose them because the animals lives are changed for the worst. Even under the best of circumstances, captivity can be hell for animals meant to roam free. Captive animals (who, in some zoos, are kept in small, barren cages, forced to sleep on concrete slabs, and imprisoned behind iron bars) often suffer from malnutrition, loneliness, the denial of all normal pleasures and behaviors, and loss of freedom and independence. Even at the best zoos, animals are rarely kept in normal social or family groups. Habitats are usually very small and inhibit or preclude natural behaviors like flying, swimming, running, hunting, climbing, scavenging, and partner selection. The animals physical and mental frustrations can lead to abnormal, neurotic and even self-destructive behavior. And, even at zoos considered good, horrible events such as beatings of animals have occurred to keep them "manageable." I have an L.A. Times article about an African elephant who was transferred from the San Diego Zoo to the San Diego Wild Animal Park--her old caretakers reported seeing her new caretakers chain her, pull her to the ground, and beat her on the head with ax handlers for two days. One described the blows as "home run swings." In the same article, San Francisco zookeeper Paul Hunter was quoted as saying of elephants. "You have to motivate them and the way you do that is by beating the hell out of them." As for conservation, most animals in zoos are not endangered, and while confining endangered species to zoos keeps them alive, it does nothing to protect wild populations; returning captive-bred animals to the wild is difficult and costly, and most zoos can't even attempt it. (Also, a 1994 report by the World Society for the Protection of Animals showed that out of 10,000 worldwide zoos, only 1200 are registered for captive breeding and wildlife conservation.) The scientific director of the Bronx Zoo wrote in his book, The Last Panda, that zoos are actually contributing to the near-extinction of giant pandas by constantly shuttling them from one zoo to another for display. (And of course endangered animals are no happier in zoos than their unendangered counterparts.) The money spent on zoos would be far better spent on programs to protect wildlife populations and their habitats. The ultimate salvation for endangered animals lies in protection of their habitats, not in a life sentence in a zoo. On those occasions when animals must be kept in captivity (i.e. those who have been born into captivity or are unable to be rehabilitated) a zoo situation is still far from ideal. Far better are facilities like non-profit animal sanctuaries, where the emphasis is on the animals themselves, not on profits.' This issue is one of a even lager one. The biggest loss of habitat is the direct result of humans, humans, humans, and humans! Within each ecosystem species of plants, animals, and microorganisms are connected to each other and their environment. When humans disturb or remove one part of that balanced ecosystem, it could affect the functioning of other parts of the ecosystem. This leads to the decline of the ecosystem. More animals are threatened with extinction than ever before. If we would protect the wildlife, with some steps as simple as practicing a greener lifestyle, and creating wildlife friendly areas in your backyard, animals wouldn't need the "help" of zoos. YOU can make a difference. My question is what are your feelings and thoughts on this and what action/s are you going to take to save the animals..and in essence save yourself, your family, and Earth?

Answer:
I found that very interesting and I completely agree. I already donate regularly to WWF, and go on sponsored events, but there is so much more I can and will do for animals. I am trying (probably not hard enough) to be greener, as are my family. The problem is, the government don't make being green easy, as eco-friendly products (cars, houses etc) are much more expensive than non-eco-friendly ones. Hopefully in the future this will change, but for now, I will try even harder to make our world a better place and protect the planet, and the creatures on it.

Ahh! Gory hallelujah! Finally someone who actually stops and thinks about what is going on in this world. As you can see from the above posters, ignorance is a prime factor for the worlds ill. A lot of people don't want to be bothered with the facts. If they know what was really going on, and how it effects us all they'd have to do something. Something that might be difficult for them to do. Lazy bastards! This is for anyone who has brains : 1) Find out what animals living near you are listed on the endangered species list. Spend some time learning about the animals and what their preferred habitat is. 2)Contribute to nature reserves and other wilderness areas. Habitat preservation is one of the best ways to help protect endangered animals. You can donate money or volunteer your time helping the nature reserve preserve habitat. 3)Buy environmentally friendly goods. Choose non-toxic cleaners and lawn care items that won't pollute streams, rivers or oceans. Avoid any products that have been made from threatened or endangered animals. Buy foods and goods that are made from materials that do not harm endangered animals or their habitat. For example, look for organic chocolate, coffee or cotton clothing that is grown without cutting down rainforests or destroying habitat. 4)Create or restore habitat for endangered animals. You can volunteer to help with projects worldwide designed to reestablish habitat. In your own backyard, plant a butterfly garden, use native plants and trees and let "wild" areas grow to provide habitat and food. JC- Bo is saying to get rid of zoos but and I quote "On those occasions when animals must be kept in captivity (i.e. those who have been born into captivity or are unable to be rehabilitated) a zoo situation is still far from ideal. Far better are facilities like non-profit animal sanctuaries, where the emphasis is on the animals themselves, not on profits"

Good question! I could do much better. I'm ashamed to admit it...but I am naturally a lazy person. Come on everyone! For a long time earth was humans protector, now because of us she is sick. It's our turn to take care of her..before everything and everyone dies. Here is a star for you for putting thins into prospective.

Actually if any of the animals in zoos were set free they would die very quickly because they've never learned how to live in the wild and find food for themselves or defend territory. Also, the zoo is the only opportunity some people have to see and learn about animals, and many times its the things people see at the zoo that encourage them to get involved in saving wildlife.

Unless an animal is starving or is being beaten, I could care less about what's happening to it. Animals are animals. If captive animals in zoos are your main concern in this world you need to get your priorities straight. Zoos are among the least of our problems. Find a cause that's actually worth fighting for..that's all I can say.
