What are a few college majors/careers suitable to shy people?

Why are so many people brainwashed into thinking if you go to college you will be successful and rich?

  • I know of so many people who went to college because they were brainwashed into thinking that if you achieve higher education you will be successful in life and make a lot of money. For example, my father went to College to be an Engineer and he even went to Grad School. Today, we aren't rich, my dad never got a job in the field he studied for. He just works in a factory. Also, you know how many people work at McDonald's, are janitors, or even homeless that went to college? In my opinion, I think college is a waste of effort and money. I hate how high schools brainwash kids into thinking, "If you go to college and achieve higher education you will be successful in life." A person with just a High School Diploma can be successful too. Did you 60% of people who go to College don't get a job in the field they study for? Why are so many people brainwashed into thinking if you go to college you will be successful and rich

  • Answer:

I went to nursing school in the 70's because I was expected to have a profession and I didn't want to work for $1.60 an hour as a nursing assistant. I followed my mom and aunt as they were both RN's. I am an LPN. It wasn't to get rich, but to take care of my self financially. The train of thought will change as higher education is more expensive, loans are hard to get, and the economy is not really geared to new jobs. Things of the world are foolish.

College only works favorably in the right hands. You are right, graduating from college does not guarantee success.

College is a business everything they do they get money from it. Government is in on it too just like how they pay schools to diagnose a kid with ADD to put them on Ritalin. Controversy, if you're lucky you get a one up after the cash you put into it, and you do become rich but Bill gates was a drop out and look at him.

My dad is an immigrant from Ireland. He dgrew up poor as hell in the country of Ireland. A real country boy. He was so poor he had to take a bath in the lake near his house. He immigrated to America with NO high school education, let alone college. Yet he makes more money than 90% of americans, owns multiple properties, and manages a construction business. Hard working, saving your money, and taking opportunities is what's important. But going to college is most definitely NOT a waste of time unless you're going to be working for yourself- like my dad.

If you go to college with an ignorant, arrogant, closed-minded attitude like that, I doubt if you'll manage to graduate. I've seen one person walk away from a Ph.D. degree AFTER he became a Ph.D. candidate just because of all the political games that have to played in order to successfully get a graduate degree. I know of another person who did exactly the same thing, pretty much for the same reasons, I think. If you are proud or your ignorance, as you seem to be, I don't know if anything can open up your closed mind. College is supposed to open up your mind. Whether or not you'll make money or lots of money depends not only on how much education you may or may not have, it really depends on how you interact with other people. 98% of all relationships is politics. You probably wouldn't believe the politics involved in getting my master's. I had to use software licensed to the geography department, but not the the School of Geology and Geophysics, to do my thesis research. I doubt that there will be another geology student working on a remote sensing degree until and unless the chairmanship of the school changes, and very likely not even then, because the person who is the chairman has changed. Social proof is a psychological phenomenon that occurs in ambiguous social situations when people are unable to determine the appropriate mode of behavior. Making the assumption that surrounding people possess more knowledge about the situation, they will deem the behavior of others as appropriate or better informed.

I never expected to get rich. I went to college in order to have the ability to make a good living. I have done well enough. I have worked in my field and in middle management. I was unable to cinvince my two children to finish college. They are just barely making it and have no medical insurance or retirement funds. The economy is in the tank right now and jobs are being outsourced to China and India. We lost over 3 million jobs in 2008. You shouldn't make your judgement about college based on the fact that unemployment is skyrocketing. That affects most people, whether they have a college education or not.
