What countries have you lived in other than the UK?

Why do other countries brag about what they have and what their country has done...?

  • As a British person, I've noticed this and it's annoying. Americans, Australians and Canadians seem to all be TOO proud. They always brag about what they have, for example Canadians always go on about their free health care, probably to make Americans jealous but UK had free health care first and then they followed us, I still don't get why our Queen of England has anything to do with Canada which is half way across the world (Justin Bieber wrote to One Direction on twitter "We share the same Queen) but I do know that they are part of our British Commonwealth. And America always says to English people "If it wasn't for us, you would be speaking German" first of all they speak OUR English language since English language comes from England, don't forget that America used to be a British Colony and was in the British monarchy, Without England there literally wouldn't be America. I bet that Americans refuse to teach this in their schools though. They teach their kids that America is the best country in the world. And Austalians are very competetive with UK when it comes to sports and they always try and claim our bands and singers, even the Bee Gees were born and raised in UK but just because they lived in Australia for a few years they are apparently Australian. And Americans always brag about what they invented when England invented the World Wide Web (Tim Berners-Lee from London who went to Oxford invented it) and the Television, John Logie Baird from Scotland which is in the British isles invented colour television and Alexander Graham also from Scotland invented the Telephone but I always see other countries try and take credit, I never see British people being overly patriotic screaming "You speak our language, we invented the internet, telephone and television, we are the best!" yet so many Canadians don't shut up about their health care like it started off in Canada or something. Also, I've seen Americans try and claim Adele as American just because she's popular over there and Modern American bands like Green Day try and immitate British invasion bands like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Queen, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Sex Pistols, Def Leppard, David Bowie, Coldplay, Oasis, Mumford and Sons, Radiohead, etc... Billy Joe from Green Day and Brandon Flowers clearly try and sound British. Why do other countries brag about what they have so much?!?! And Americans, well they just seem to think that the world revolves around them... you do get that rare English person who goes on about what England has done, for example, one English man always complains that he dislikes Americans because they put emphasis on the English language but that's about it. Other western societys go on about it and brag about how their country is the best, for example, Justin Bieber is just a kid but I've seen articles of him going on about how Canada is APPARENTLY the best country in the world! From what I've seen, a lot of Americans seem to think that everyone wants to be American. Especially British people when most British people seem to actually dislike Americans if anything... they think that Americans are trying to steal English traditions and change English history, they think that Americans are even trying to steal our language and call it the "American" language instead of English language.

  • Answer:

HAHAHAHA! The "American" language. People are stupid and try to support there country, its foolish to try to compare such things. A lot of great bands came from Britain and I actually think some of the most unique bands like Enter Shikari are from your home turf. But america certainly has an edge on technology because of the brain drain from other countries. To tell you the truth, I think those from other countries boast about their country because it incites people and can be very contraversial. By the way most americans hate the new health care bill if you didn't know, and I don't remember learning about being a british monarchy in High School, but I most definitely did in college. Also I don't think everyone wants to be an American.. just Mexicans.

Why do you care? They are just being patriotic. The reason that they see Alexander Grahame Bell as their own is because he invented the telephone in the states. So that's them just being ignorant. By that I mean they are only taught that he invented it in the states which makes them believe he was American. They're not trying to own him. The fact that he's Scottish is just simply omitted. You answered your own question about not understanding why the English Queen was also their Head of state. As a British Colony who, unlike the US didn't revolt, they kept the monarchy. Since there are no universally accepted criteria for distinguishing languages from dialects then I guess you could argue that American is a language. Much in the same way Scots spoke in Lowland Scotland is considered a language in it's own right. They do spell certain words differently, mom and color to name a few. English itself is derived from several other languages. Latin, French and German is ubiquitous within the English language. You are ignorant to believe that there wouldn't be an America without the English. England or GB only ruled 13 colonies in the states and some of them were taken from Spanish and French control. If it wasn't for the British, America would still be America they'd just be speaking Spanish, French or Dutch or a combination of them all. It might be true that Americans don't get taught British history (because that's what it is) in Elementary, middle school or high school. But that same is said about UK citizens (at least Scots) I didn't get taught American history while I was in School. Some Americans believe that they have everything they need in America so they don't need to learn about the rest of the world, which frankly, I think we need to take a page from their book because we are slowly becoming Americani(z)ed.
