  Hungry Ghosts are rampaging spirits, restless homeless. They have been abandoned by unfilial descendants, or are spirits of those who died violent deaths and were never given poper burials. According to a Taoist legend, The gates of hell are opened once a year to allow such spirits to wander among the living. To placate them, humans make offerings of joss-sticks, food and money at every roadside, cross-roads, temple and other open spaces. These are left at places not too near their homes-- for obvious reasons. Few older people like to go out after dark, and only the bold marry during this dangerous month.
