Is the doomsday year of 2012 real?

Any one that believes in the 2012 Doomsday theory what about leaP year?

  • Im not disagreeing or argueing I just want to find out about if the Mayan calender featured leap year because if it didnt the world was supposed to end 7 years ago or something like that. I don't belive in the 2012 theory I'm just wondering on youre thoughts and explanations.

    Good question. Leap years are not relevant. The Maya used three "official" calendars. One of 260 days for a religious year, an "official" year of 360 days and a long count, which was only a system of counting days and was not carved on any rock. Because it only counted days, not months and years, leap years meant nothing. The days were organised into bak'tuns which were 20 x 20 x 18 x 20 days (144,000 days) long. They were also aware that the real year was about 365 days long, but they didn't care much about that. According to calculations based on their creation myth, the world began on 11 August 3114 BC. That means any day since then has a particular number and name. Mayan people were named after the day of the long count, so one of the kings was called "18 Rabbit". He was defeated in a war and executed about the year 738 AD. If you translate the Mayan counting system into ours, then you get a number in our counting system. This was done in the 1960s by three scholars and they came up with the end of the 13 bak'tun being on 21 December 2012. The Maya believed that 13 was a lucky or significant number, and there is an inscription that says at the end of the 13th bak'tun nine somethings (probably gods) will descend from somewhere to somewhere else. The inscription is damaged so the exact meaning will never be known unless another version is found. In fact this calculation has been challenged by other scholars who say the Maya used a different date for creation or actually made an error in their own count. But this has nothing to do with leap years. The myth about leap years seems to have started on Facebook last week and was obviously put there by someone who did not know what they were talking about.
