Volunteer Work in Haiti?

I am extremely interested in volunteer work in Haiti, but I don't know any organizations that will pay for the?

  • Does anybody know any organizations that will pay for the airplane ticket? or anything remotely close to that? :)

  • Answer:

Not likely. PLEASE, think about the situation there. You would be one more untrained mouth to feed and water and protect and find a toilet for. There is no place to stay. There is minimal electricity. Think about what you would need. If you went for 10 days, you would need a gallon of water for each day. A gallon of water weighs about 8.5 pounds. That's 85 pounds of water. You would need your own food. Figure a pound of food a day. 10 pounds. You would need a sleeping bag. 5 pounds. How about a first aid kit? 2 pounds. Clothing? 10 pounds. So, you have more than 100 pounds of supplies _just for yourself_ to lug around destroyed streets, in 80+ degree heat, surrounded by stinking, rotting corpses. Don't expect a motor vehicle to transport you. Your health insurance is not valid in Haiti. If you break a limb, you would go to the end of the line for treatment. If it were an open break and became infected, the current treatment of choice is _amputation_, because of the lack of antibiotics. In six months to a year, maybe Habitat for Humanity might need people. But join now and start getting trained now.

I don't know of any place that will pay for your ticket. Money that is being paid on your ticket (an untrained person) could better go to someone in Haiti with no food or water. Your plane ticket costs roughly $400, most people there live on $360 a year. What you're saying is you want to do something cool, but you don't really want to sacrifice anything for it. I don't admire that attitude.

What Mary O said is all true, but I just want to add that NO organization pays for you to get there unless you have such an amazing skill that is so needed they can't get it any other way. NGO's aren't in business to pay for your travel. They're in business to help the situations they're dealing with.

I sympathize with you. It would be a wonderful experience. I know the habitat for humanity will be building homes in Haiti later on. you might contact them and see if you can work with them. A way to get there would be to work your way down on a tramp steamer or get a ride with someone going that way. You must have a plan to present to the people you'll be working for. Heres the list: Aid agencies helping victims of the quake American Red Cross-response fund at www.redcross.org Americares-donations at www.americares.org Habitat for Humanity-donations at www.habitat.org Operation USA-donations of money and United Air Line miles at www.opusa.org UNICEF-donations at www.unicefusa.org World vision=donations at www.worldvision.org

Why would you want to volunteer in Haiti? You'll just get mugged or killed.
