What is the difference between a vaccination and immunization?

Free immunization project - needs support - suggest, Please?

  • Friends Helping Club is our organisation of 37 years old, formed to help the needy. Last year we came up with a new project i.e. Free immunization to children ( MMR, Typhoid, Hepatitis-B vaccination etc.). Hundreds of poor children of our locality are benefited. Due to financial constraints we are limiting our scope- I mean there are lots of children deprived & many other vaccines which we are not providing due to cost factor like HIB, Smallfox vaccine etc.

  • Answer:

I'm curious what country you are in. In the United States the typhoid and smallpox vaccines are not available, and children over 5 years don't get the Hib vaccine. I'm not sure why you think children need the Hepatitis B vaccine. The risk factors are sex and intravenous drugs. I'm sure your efforts could be put to better use. Perhaps making sure they have access to clean water and adequate nutrition, shoes and warm clothes, and books for school, would be a better use of your time and funds.

I'm not sure what it is that you are asking for help with, but if you are trying to decide what vaccines,or how many children to limit yourself to then I suggest contacting the local school nurse, She should be able to tell you which school has the least amount of children that have met the school standards for vaccinations. It has been my experience that the school that has the highest population of low income will be that school. She should also be able to tell you which immunizations are needed. I would say start with that school and then if you still are able look at the next highest number and keep going until you have depleted your budget. Also sometimes there are actually health clinics on some campuses that can help with this as there is the dept. of public health. Just be aware that some parents will be scared due to citizenship status. Good Luck and keep up the great work!

Your group could make a joint effort with some other community service organization such as Kiwanis Club (see Kiwanis.org for more information). By combining your resources you could have a bigger impact on your community. Good luck.
