What is it like to be a medical social worker?

Can someone explain to me what what it will be like to be an social worker?

  • I will be a college Junior this fall & I am going to school to be a social worker. Thing is I'm not exactly sure what it is i will do. I mean, i know I will be helping people but I am not sure as to how. So far all my classes have taught me is about the different people we will help, the different fields in social work i can explore but no class has yet explained to me HOW i will be helping these people. And yes i pay attention in class, i have never received anything lower than an A in any of my social work classes. For example I believe i will probably first start working with children & family services then after obtaining a license migrate over to work within the school system.(in regards to children services) I know I will be checking up,doing home visits and making sure the parents are properly taking care of the child but if they are not, what do i do next? How exactly do i conduct interviews with families? Do i take the child that second & leave? I know I've only done 2 yrs of college so far which was mostly liberal arts general type classes so most of my questions will be answered in the next 2 yrs but I am curious to hear from social workers now. I know i want to be a social worker, the job description is pretty much my personality bio! I'm always seen as the mother of the group, taking care of people and trying to solve problems. I've was a peer mentor for 3 years, a tutor for 2 years and i currently work at a daycare, so i'm not asking this because i am hot/cold on whether this is the career for me or not passionate about it, I am just curious on what I should expect.

  • Answer:

My mum used to be a social worker in London. She used to work with the police sometimes but she also had to work long hours and she was sometimes called out in the middle of the night. Also, she said that clients were sometimes very offensive. I'm sure there are pros too...
