Volunteering in NY? For teens?
-
Does anyone know of a good way to volunteer with senior citizens in New York for teens? I have looked on various sites, but I have not found anything that interests me. Any other volunteer opportunities in NY?

Answer:
Volunteer to help out people that are retired and on social security (limited incomes). These people often have small odd-jobs that need done but they can't do them or afford to pay to have them done. They will appreciate the help more then most other people would. This is something you can do right in your local community. Some examples would be: Get groceries or go with them to get them-Carry them back. Deliver Mail or pick it up for them. Help them clean their residence. Keep their sidewalks clean and clear. Walk with them to the local Park to get them 'out of the house' more often Read to them. Watch TV with them Wash their windows. Do laundry for them -- this can be heavy for them to carry Just SOME examples and if you are doing it in your own community your parents are more likely to be OK with it and you can put the word out thru Posters on poles, in grocery, laundry, and thru your local church or Priest (even if YOU don't attend regularly). BE CARE-FULL THO PLEASE, Take an adult with you to meet EACH person the first time, if parents can't the priest might. I applaud you for considering volenteering your services to others, The world would be better if we all did things like this.

Call Church's in your area and ask if they have any members that are shut ins and need a visitor or someone to run an errand or chore for them. Call your local Fire Dept that is a volunteer one and ask if they need any sort of cleaning or landscaping work done. Call a nearby hospital and see if they need volunteers to wheel patients around or just give them company. Look into Foodbanks in your area. They can always use help distributing food.
