In what condition will Goodwill sell items?
-
I try to send all my items that I no longer want to Goodwill or Salvation Army. Most of the stuff is in good to great condition but sometimes items are faded, or pilled sweaters, or showing signs of wear like small stains. Everything I send is intact with no rips, holes or major damage. I once read a letter in an advice column from a volunteer complaining about the condition of items donated but she didn't offer any guidelines either. I don't want to be a nuisance but i also believe that there is always someone somewhere who could use my items. So my question is... does anyone know what the acceptable guidelines are that Goodwill uses for selling their donated items (clothing and housewares)? Are there any items that they reject and if so, what is done with those items?

Answer:
They will only accept items they think they are able to sell. chances are the stained items will be rejected. I think faded items will be fine. Because some people will by the faded clothes for work clothes. They won't take beds, baby cribs, televisions, computers, stoves, washers or dryers. Most of the stuff on the list of things they reject are items they would have to pay a recycling center to dispose of. Such as televisions and big appliances.

I didn't know either - although you ARE on target on the way you give. Goodwill's website has a list of "DOs and DON'Ts" re: donating: http://www.goodwill.org/page/guest/about/howweoperate/donations/dosanddonts ...though they didn't answer the question of what they do with unacceptable items.
Things that you would buy if you went shopping in the store. Just because people are poor does not mean they have to wear rags. Also, if your goodwill is anything like these where I live. They are more than if you went and bought it at walmart. Actually, most things you can get them cheaper at walmart.

in good condition they wont accept furniture stuff like mattress, bedroom set, anything LARGE lol i would only think the stuff they sell are bad quality b/c some of the workers there probably got the good stuff for themselves LOL (not sure though just wondering) and i know that they sell things really expensive!!!!!!! comparing to the stuff's worth ya know when they reject something, they simply wont take it

My guideline is I only give clothes that are consignment store quality - meaning they are "gently used": no stains, holes or damage and are only slightly faded. I also wash and fold them because if I see a clothing stain, busted zippers or missing buttons at these stores, I'm not going to buy it.
