Youth work and Community Occupations...?
-
Aussie answers if possible... Im kind of interested in getting into youth work or some kind of community services/development job, but I dont really have much of an insight into what would be involved. I can imagine there would be many different roles within this industry that would take place in different environments and scenarios so I was wondering if anyone out there works in this industry, what they do, where they work, how its pays, what kind of work is involved (administrative? direct contact with youth? ruinning/developing programs? are you based in an office all day?) I have a friend who works for a community youth resource centre and her main role is helping to create programs/activities and events for the local kids, but I know there would be much more to it and many more different ways i could be employed... Any help/advice appreciated. PS, Im thinking of doing Cert 4 in Youth Work at Tafe as a starting point... They also have a Cert 3 in Community Services course. Thankyou! :-)

Answer:
There are many different pathways you could take if you decide to get into the community services sector, it ranges from administrative roles, housing workers, emergency relief workers, child protection workers as well as working within prisons as a drug and alcohol worker or to even work with families of men and women who are serving time. A lot of the job is working at a desk but depending on the type of pathway you take will determine how hands on you will be. If working with youth sometimes you might not have direct contact with them but you might with their parents or carers but that all depends on the workplace. I don't personally work as any of these but have done voluntary work as well as know many people who have been clients of places that offers these services. If you want more of a hands on job then this course will set you in the right direction. I am currently studying cert 3 in community services. Also about the pay, i suppose just like every other job it really depends where you work i have looked into it in the past and the salary ranges from $50,000 to $125,000 but the reward you get from knowing your making a difference is worth so much more. you could always look at the DHS website which is a major community service provider or even go into an organization and ask them what their job is like. To get a feel of what it would be like maybe you should even try doing voluntary work at an organization. You can do it from one to five days a week completely by your choice. i hope i was of some assistance and enjoy the course if you do decide to go through with it
