I'm looking to do some volunteer work over the summer but where?

I live in Long Island New York, and though I'd love to travel some where to do volunteer work, I cannot afford to fly to a different country. I was wondering what some of the volunteer opportunities in New York that have weekly volunteer programs?

I don't live in New York, but you could probably find an Animal Shelter, Library, or church to volunteer at. I'm sure they'd love to have a new slave :)
