Does anyone know of an organization where I can volunteer abroad?

Habitat for Humanity Global Village http://www.habitat.org/gv/default.aspx The Fuller Center for Housing Global Builders http://www.fullercenter.org/global-builders Both of these require you to pay your own airfare, plus a fee which covers your transportation and accommodations within the country as well as a donation to the local affiliate (this helps pay for the building materials). The fees for trips I've taken have been in the $1000-$1500 range. The teams are headed by a volunteer trip leader who chooses the team members, generally based on a phone interview to make sure they'll fit in. You don't have to know how to build a house - you just have to be willing to do what's necessary. You'll be taught the skills needed for the tasks being done each day. I've gone on international trips with both of these groups and feel that they're safe, legit, and serious about eradicating substandard housing, one family at a time.

These days it's difficult to find ones that don't at least ask you to pay your own airfare. There is the Peace Corps...however they have a 2 year commitment which is pretty steep but they cover basic expenses.
