What is a reverse auction at a charity event?

• My dad bought 2 tickets to a fundraising event to help raise money to light up the downtown courthouse at Christmas (city budget cuts won't cover the cost, so their reaching out to the community for help). They were $200 a ticket, and include a nice dinner. Some things came up for him and my mom, and they are no longer able to attend, so he gave the tickets to my husband and I. They say there is going to be a silent auction and a reverse auction. We were wondering what a reverse auction was, and if we have to participate? We will probably bid on some things in the silent auction to help out, but we can't compete with the high rollers in the community on a real auction where thousands are being bid if that is what a reverse auction is. Any ideas what it is?

  A reverse auction is when the item is so horrible you do not want it. The lowest bidder wins the item It could be a Tour of the City Dump. Starting bid $5. Other groups have done it where the highest bidder gets to give the ugly item to someone else at the dinner. This is funny when a group such as Mom and Dad and in laws all attend. Gramp pa will bid just for the honor of giving it to a son in law Just enjoy the dinner and bid what you can for the silent auction items.
