Chances of being accepted into the Peace Corps?

  • I started the application process in March, and I was nominated to be an English teacher in sub-saharan Africa in August. The Peace Corps sent a medical kit out a couple days ago, and I'm wondering what kinds of medical problems could cause me not to be accepted. The only thing I'm really worried about is that I have a bad ovary that used to make me sick every other month, but when I'm on birth control, I'm completely 100% okay. Would the Peace Corps still be willing to send me to Africa?

  • Answer:

Years ago I had a friend who was all set to go to Africa with the Peace Corps but was forced to drop out weeks before he was scheduled to depart due to a bad reaction to his anti-malarial drugs. You've probably already read the Peace Corps Medical Information sheet, but just in case you missed it here's a link. http://multimedia.peacecorps.gov/multimedia/pdf/library/peacecorpsmedinfo.pdf I noticed that one of the disqualifying conditions is ovarian cysts. Another is symptomatic uterine fibroids. Hopefully if your condition is well controlled by medication you will still be eligible. I believe the PC looks at most medical conditions on a case-by-case basis.
