Question about volunteer to paid position?
-
There is a question I would like the answer to. Let's say that you graduated from college with a degree in history. You did a historical internship at a museum and also have experience working in several different areas of several museums. You find one particular area of museum work that you have enjoyed but maybe you think you need to gain more experience in the field. As a result, you decide to volunteer for a certain position in a museum that interest you? In the meantime you have several temp paying jobs as an administrative assistant to hold you over for money until you find work in your field and also because you do not mind doing the work and are good at it. You might have experience working administrative in school admissions. Is there a possibility that the volunteer position at the museum becomes paid work after a year or two? How long would it take?

Answer:
Been there, done that. I worked in the museum talking to tourists to pay the bills while interning in historical archaeology. In my case it was 4 years before I was paid for any archaeology there, and rarely was I paid enough of the year to make it work. Finally tried the contract circuit to make more money. After 16 years, I gave up trying to make a living at it. Museums are like universities - they only pay a living wage to those who have higher degrees. Unless that museum has an unusually big endowment, don't count on making a living there. That said, I had a great time in those 16 years, and don't regret it for one minute.

I would suggest talking to the museum's Curator. Your chances of being hired or not will depend on a few different factors...budgeting being one of the most important. He'll/she'll be able to give you insight as to how, and what you need to do to obtain that paid position. good luck to you.
