Non-Profit Organization?

  • Hi i am spending some amount on social service from past 3 years. now i would like to spend that amount in a systematic way. so i am planing to start a non-profit organization for this. my main focus is on education, orphans and poor. can anyone let me know how to start this? Regards Sanjay, AndhraPradesh, India.

  • Answer:

hi there, It is good that you realize something about being systematic. Running a non-profit organization is way too far from the idealism that most people have. We may have the romantic notions about helping people, yet there are many realistic issues that we need to deal with. Here are some tips that I would like you to consider before you operate your NPO: a. Involve other people. These other people may help you put things in order or make you see your project in a more objective view, or contribute financially to your cause. b. Link and learn from other NPOs. c. Check for local laws pertaining to operation of NPOs. d. Analyze your context / local situation. e. Define your goals and outcomes. f. Start with what you have. Dont be too ambitious. Dont overestimate your resources, start small or in your own community. g. Be transparent to your clients and let them participate in some aspects of the project. In the process, you will learn a lot of things. Keep up the good work and good luck!

Hi Sanjay, I commend you on your work as I volunteer 25-40 hours a month with all kinds of non profits focusing on youth and education and I know it is an important but challenging and rewarding endeavor. I think your best resource are others that are currently doing it (or have already been there). Why reinvent the wheel? Search forums and organizations that have huge galas and fundraisers and try to speak with them on the process and their experiences. Who knows maybe you can partner with them in some capacity? Good Luck. http://www.ncna.org/ http://www.idealist.org/ Shonika
