How to find volunteer work?
-
This spring I'm suppose to start my application process for the United States Air Force Academy. I got my grades in check and I'm beginning my third year of high school, now I just have to push for SAT/ACT scores and also volunteer work. Where can I find volunteer work in my area and what are some good volunteer jobs for a high school student? I do a lot of work for my church's different ministries, would that count for volunteer work?

Answer:
Volunteer work is anything you do to help the community without compensation. If you're not getting paid for your work at your church- it's volunteer, that's the type of stuff the air force academy is looking for. You can also set up a school "group" or club that can visit/help various organizations. This would be looked at as leadership (important for your application!) and volunteer work. You can work soup kitchens, animal shelters, visit nursing homes, set up a food drive, clean up your community (trash walks ect.), sort books at your local library, create fundraisers (for what you see fit), or even clothing drives. Anything that will help others around you, it literally can be ANYTHING! If you organize a group, it's easier to put on your application. Good luck...

There are a lot of ways to find a volunteer work. You can scan the Internet. In case you want to volunteer in blood banks like Red Cross, Bantex, BioLife, Talecris, etc, I'll provide you a directory below. Scan it, make phone calls now, persuade them why they will accept you and if you can, try visiting the place. Apart from organizing a blood drive, other types of work inside a blood bank include data encoding, completing paperworks, answering important phone calls and managing a small canteen.

Religiously-oriented volunteer work is nice, but it could raise a question in the heads of people who see that on resumes--"will this person proselytize and alienate colleagues instead of doing work?" How about starting a Red Cross chapter at school, or checking out local volunteer ambulance corps to see if they need support volunteers?

You would have to ask the church about that. But your local hospital, animal shelter,GED class....almost anything you can think of.
