Ideas for volunteering abroad?

I would like to get involved with virtual volunteering. Any ideas?

  • Does anyone you know get involved with virtual (online) volunteering? If so what sort of stuff do they do? How much interest is out there for this type of volunteering? Cheers

  • Answer:

You might be interested in checking out sites like http://www.care2.com/ which has a variety of "Click to donate" sites, petitions to sign, and articles about learning about different things you can do, such as being more eco-friendly (at home, in your choices of products you buy etc). There are also other click to donate sites like www.thehungersite.com etc. I don't know if doing that sort of stuff would give nearly the same satisfaction as being able to do hands-on volunteering and working side-by-side with people in the flesh... but I guess everyone is different! There are also cyber Rotary Clubs now which you could look at joining, which is probably a little more practical that just hanging out at care2.com . There is a list of current Rotary e-clubs at http://www.rotary.org/newsroom/downloadcenter/support/eclub.html

What would one do volunteering "virtually?" I guess if we can sell each other carbon credits to feel better about polluting the environment, then virtually volunteering isn't far off. I'd suggest you find a LOCAL cause and volunteer for REAL to help it.

By answering people here on Yahoo Answers, I feel like I'm volunteering my time to help other people solve some of their issues. I've gotten some great feedback from people who say my answers helped them see things differently and they feel better because of it. Maybe you could do somthing like that? What are your strengths and what organizations would you volunteer with in person? Do a google search on something like "volunteer (your specialty)" or "virtual volunteer" and see what comes up. The world can always use more people wanting to help which helps to offset the angry people who only know how to tear down. Good for you.

Many organizations need assistance with various research and fundraising activities. Sometimes, you will have to contact the organization to see if some of these opportunities are available. For example, I am the podcaster for my local volunteer organization. Some of the other volunteers maintain blogs and web sites, coordinate fundraising activities, and perform grant research. First, you will need to find a non-profit organization that matches up with your goals, beliefs, and values. You will need to have a conversation with the organization to let them know how you would like to help. Most of these organizations will welcome the assistance. Your volunteer centers and the United Way should be able to help you find an organization for you: http://www.handsonnetwork.org/our-network/ http://www.pointsoflight.org/centers/find_center.cfm http://national.unitedway.org http://www.volunteerresource.org Good luck!
