Volunteer work at the Children's Hospital?

At the age of 17, are you able to volunteer to work at the hospital in NZ?

  • My dream job has always been a doctor ever since i was a little girl. But i want to really find out, if this is what i want, if this is the right job for me- after all, this is something that i will be doing for the rest of my life, and something that i really want :) In order to do that, the only way i can find out is to experience it for myself, first hand. At the age of 17, or even later, it's too late to change a career path I would like to volunteer at the st John's hospital in Takapuna or Starship or somewhere close to Auckland and Northshore, but the only problem is i am unsure if i am able to volunteer, because they are probably already busy with volunteers from university. I am a 17 year old high school student, 18 next year, and i would like to volunteer at a hospital My grades aren't straight A's, and im not the top in the class, but i have the determination and skill to help out those in need, I am a good communicator and is very fast to learn new things. Thank you :)

  • Answer:

Contact St John. They have a large volunteer pool, which includes a group of Vollies known as FEDS, (Friends of the Emergency Services). This work entails a 4 hour shift working in the Emergency Department. The role is primarily 'patient and family support'. You are not involved in any clinical procedures but spend your time moving around patients providing comfort and support, (winning hearts and minds). You mainly offer reassurance and sympathy and assist with the patients family and visitors. Permits the staff to get on with the nursing and treating. Great way to see the hospital at the sharp end, will give you a good toe hold into that field. Good luck doc

you can have a mentor in medication :) if your school has job shadowing you can try job shadowing a local doctor. other than that i can't think of any other way to get the medical experience then to go to college and get your degree and got to medical school. plus i live in the U.S so i'm not sure what the limits are there compared to hear :)
