Are there any volunteer abroad programs that are free or really inexpensive?

Are there any free volunteer abroad programs?

  • I'm surprised how much a lot of them cost. I'm graduating high school a semester early, and I'd like to volunteer abroad for the semester. I'll be seventeen years old. Are there any programs...?

  • Answer:

There are no free programs for 17 year olds to go abroad and volunteer, sorry. Instead of paying for the transportation, housing, security, training, supervision and staff support for 17 year olds, organizations hire local people to build their own schools, take care of their orphans, dig wells, serve food, etc. There are lots of organizations that you can pay for a short-term, feel good experience, and your money covers your transportation, housing, security, training, supervision and staff support -- and may also pay local people whose job you would otherwise be taking away. Not saying that these programs aren't good or worthwhile, but that's why they cost so much. There are programs that will send you abroad for free, when you are older, have at least a college degree, and have some skills and experience that are needed overseas. The short answer is no. Peace Corps wants college degree, you don't even have a high school degree. No one is going to allow you to do it for free. I suggest that you volunteer in your community. Hope this helps.

No be short, no, particularly for someone who just graduated from high school. You can, however, apply for the GO! Volunteer Abroad Scholarship and then use those funds toward the program fee: http://www.go-volunteerabroad.com/volunteer-abroad-scholarship You should also read this post for more fund raising ideas: http://www.go-volunteerabroad.com/volunteer-abroad-blog/top-10-tips-fundraise-your-volunteer-travels/1539 Good luck! free programs are hard to come by, they best you could do is finding more affordable options like http://www.volunteercapitalcentre.org
