How can I dedicate myself to ONE cause and also help other causes?
-
I find myself overwhelmed with what's going downright WRONG with the world. [animal testing, illegal human testing in 3rd-world countries, corporal wrongdoings, big government, animal slaughter for fur/food, global warming, oppression, genocide, carcinogens/harsh in personal care products, etc.] How can I dedicate myself to ONE cause and stop worrying about SO many?

Answer:
Actually, the answer you are looking for is contained within your question. It is so easy to get overwhelmed with bad news. That was happening to me too. I decided to apply to serve on the Board of Directors of an organization that is dedicated to preserving areas of natural land. It is a well-respected organization, with a great track record of successes. This was important to me, because I needed to feel like I truly was making a difference. I'm no big hero, but my efforts to further the goals (and continued successes) of this group is my "life line" when the news is filled with terrible things. I am able to at least take comfort in the work my organization is doing. Yes, I still see so much wrong, but by being active in my group, I come in contact with so many other groups that are working, in slightly different ways, toward the same goal. This could be a very long answer, if you'd like me to write a couple of things I have actually seen that are so inspirational, e-mail me. And remember, as you focus your energies toward whatever goal you choose, you are contributing to what you believe in. There is no finer testimony to a life than that. And remember the words of Emily Dickinson; If I can stop one heart from breaking, I shall not live in vain; If I can ease one life the aching, Or cool one pain, Or help one fainting robin Unto his nest again, I shall not live in vain. Best of luck. P.S. And, in case I didn't get to the heart of your question....good works are all connected. When my group preserves some land, wildlife has a home, old growth trees are protected, bird migration patterns are preserved, streams are kept from pollution, air quality is improved....it goes on and on. My "drop in the bucket" ripples outward. A thought that keeps me sane.

There is no reason why you cannot support several causes. You have to figure out what is most important to you. You must also realize that we cannot control everything in the world and sometimes we have to try to not worry about the things we cannot change.

Pick one that can connect to some of the others. This way when you find out that it's not fulfilling your sense of accomplishment you can move to one of the others. Eventually you'll find one that really moves you in such a way that your mind will become filled. Other issues will remain important, but you'll be able to focus on that one that you have been learning about.
