Any point in me still trying to volunteer?
-
I want to do some volunteer work as a first aid volunteer for St John. Yet it seems continuously I have been required to do everything even in order to contact them. First off none of there contact details worked requiring me to contact them in person after countless email and phone rejections. After finally organizing times for me to go to a meeting and start some of the training etc, the night I go, there was no one there and was told it may have been cancelled. What should I do? Still try or leave it? I want to do something to give back to the community that is within my ability but maybe I'm just unwanted?

Answer:
I love to volunteer, and promote volunteering. However, for you to enjoy volunteering and have a positive experience I suggest you go somewhere else. I'm sure there are other organizations that would love you to volunteer, and would take the time to get you started properly. Good Luck!

I think that it's not mean to be. I mean, you tried. It's not your fault if they are flailing on volunteer numbers, I mean there seems to be no infrastructure to support new volunteers. But don't give up on volunteering in the community. Look for other places you can help - maybe there is a local soup kitchen for the homeless? What about any environmental groups? I'm sure you can think of something.

Just give up. It's not your fault, they've made it too hard for you.

First thing is to ask how old you are. Child labor laws apply to charitable organizations too, and it may be that St. John's just does not want the legal liability they'd incur allowing you to work for them. It may also be that you simply don't have skills they can use. It hurts to want to be of service and be rejected, and yes, in a sense, it is quite unfair. But take it from an old fart who's been volunteering for decades - your sense of obligation to your fellow man is admirable and honorable. I sure as heck wish more young folks thought like you! Here's a suggestion: find out from St. John's just what kind of volunteer services they can use, and then spend a couple years learning how to provide one or two of those services - then try again. And please - don't give up just because St. John's rejects you - surely there are other charitable agencies in your community that WOULD welcome help - especially manual labor.
