What's it like doing community service at an animal shelter?

Community service for college freshmen (males)?

• Does anyone have suggestions for freshmen guys in terms of a community service project? They cannot have cars on campus and can get transportation for a project but too much paperwork to get through to get a van. How do you interest about 35 freshmen guys in a community service project and get them to follow through? I am their RA. The town the school is in has a lot of needs and service agencies. They have blood drives on campus. I am thinking it might be hard to get them to participate but it is a requirement for me as their RA (offering a community service activity). There is a no freeze shelter in the town for homeless people just down the street. Should I get the guys to donate funds, even if a few dollars each, and have a competition between rooms and then go to Dollar Store for toothpaste, shampoo, etc. for homeless shelter? I am thinking guys might participate less. Many kids leave campus on the weekends which is a problem with projects like raking leaves for an agency, etc. It has to be something where it can be done on campus or close keeping in mind.

  Have a competition to see who(or teams) could get the most empty beer cans/bottles, then return them for the deposit and donate the money to a charity.
