What are my chances of getting accepted in the peace corps?

If I join the Peace Corps, would my significant other be allowed to move to my host country?

  • I've that Peace Corps is a little strict about romantic regulations. If my boyfriend were to move to the same country that I was serving in and get a job or something like that, would Peace Corps allow this? (I am afraid of sending an email directly to the Peace Corps, because I don't want this to hinder my chances of getting accepted.)

I believe so, but it's not something you'd want to share with them. Basically, while *you* would be the property of PC, your SO would be on his own and they would have no domain over him. There *are* rules (which are interpreted differently from post to post.) about how long visitors can stay (and other such things), but realistically, you are pretty much on your own in PC and what happens at site stays at site. (Warning, though, one universal truth is the PC grapevine is wide, vast and quick.) Still, it would be tough to do because your SO would have to follow all country immigration rules and job-finding rules. These can be incredibly tough. Not all countries have great opportunities for non-citizens. Housing could also be tricky because in many posts at site, locals don't accept opposite-sex roommates. You could be placed in some kind of dorm housing where it wasn't allowed, or be in one of the countries where you live with a host family during your entire service. That wouldn't fly, either. My opinion is that you should apply with the assumption you would be serving on your own, without your SO and if he could join you later, fine. But if you can't handle the thought of 27 months without him, you probably shouldn't pursue it. There is no guarantee whatsoever it would be doable in your situation, and there's no way to know until you got to your actual site, which would be about three months after you left the States.
