How do I dispose of CRT monitors or batteries?

I have no idea how to properly dispose of an old CRT monitor I used to use for my PC, and also a rechargeable battery in a phone I no longer want. I am not willing to sell, not interested in holding onto both until somebody will take it for free. So who do I call or bring these items to, to dispose of properly/legally?

Answer:
Call town hall. They'll put you in touch with (probably) the recycling center. Most communities have a few days a year where hazardous waste can be brought and disposed of.
