How old do you have to be to volunteer in SPCA shelters?

Animal Shelters to volunteer at in Maryland for minors?

I am dedicated to becoming a veterinarian when I grow up. I am currently 17 and has heard that in order to get a higher % in getting into a vet school, they look at how much experience you have with animals (1000+ hours I believe). Are there any animal shelters that you know of in Maryland that offer volunteer services to minors? All I know are PetSmart and Petco.. I don't think they offer volunteer services and I have no idea what animal shelters there are in Maryland.. can anyone please help me?
