How do you start a non-profit organization in California?

I want to start a local fundraising club called Sports for Aid but I DONT KNOW WHERE TO START! any help?

  • Hello, I am in 12th grade and I would like to start a fundraising club in my town of Tracy, California called Sports for Aid (SFA). The idea is that people come out and play sports and would pay to enter their teams into tournaments of different sports such as basketball and football. The money collected would go to an organization such as Red Cross or the local Boys and Girls Club. I have this idea and I have many people, especially students looking for community service hours for playing sports, that would participate but I have no idea where to start? Do I go to the city to ask them if I can start this up? Should I just make a website and have people sign up and I host the tournaments at the local park and would I need to inform the city for that as well? I have never done something like this before and anyone with experience can you please help me out? THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

    I wouldnt charge teams directly, but I would suggest that all teams are aware they need sponsorship money to enter say $50 per team, there are no cash prizes but winners get commemorative medals or something..also send out fliers and hire a field or b-ball court to play in, invite crowds to watch and have people walk around with donation buckets to give more money too....aside from the main sports attractions you could set up fun stalls, such as bake sales and the likes...all donated of course good luck hope you get it started

Get some descent looking literature,marketing concepts,and start at the chamber of commerce(they will set you in the right direction),push the fact,not to much,that it is a tax write off.And good for the community

You need to partner with a nonprofit organization. Legally you cannot do fund raising without being a non profit...check it all out at http://www.irs.gov/charities/index.html: Hope this helps

i think i would go to the organization you want the money to go to, and talk to them about your idea then try to get the word out through friends/family ..anyone you know.

:You can't. It is illegal to solicit money from the public without a state-issued solicitation license. And they only give those to properly-constituted nonprofit corporations. Talk to the organizations FIRST. Ask to speak to the development director. Tell them what you want to do. They'll figure it out.
