Can I volunteer at a local animal shelter?

How can I volunteer at my local animal shelter?

  • I live in Sacramento, California and I want to volunteer and help out at an animal shelter. How can I go about doing this? Also, has anyone else here ever volunteered at an animal shelter? What were your experiences? I'd appreciate positive experiences, but I guess bad comes with the good, so anything works! Thanks in advance.

  • Answer:

First off, how old are you? How old you are will determine which path you should take. If you're a teenybopper, so under 19, you can call around and see if you can hook up with a group that allows you to work at a Vet's Office and/or Shelter. You might even be able to get some sort of Credit for it. If you're over 19, just open the phone book and start calling. I did the first rout and got to visit dairy farms around Phoenix, work at a vet's office, and work at shelters. It basically boiled down to cleaning cat boxes, feeding animals, playing with the animals, and other grunt work. It was very rewarding.

Other answers

Call the shelter and ask about volunteering. The person answering the phone will contact you to the volunteer coordinator or the administrative officer. That person will ask you various questions to determine if they think you can be helpful enough to be accepted in their volunteer program! Good luck to you!
