Should I help this organization in a community project?
-
I have an opportunity to help and organization with a very good community project. The problem is the organization has also done a lot bad things as well. As examples should you help a tobacco company in a community project? Or help the Catholic Church in a community project even though both these organization have done terrible things and covered them up? Does the opportunity to help out weigh who you are working with or is this "Supping with the devil?"

Answer:
As a community volunteer, it is important that you find an organization that you would feel comfortable being affiliated with. If the discomfort outweighs the good that you may be doing, then maybe it's better to look for alternative ways you can help. Maybe there's a way you can help the community with a similar type of result through another organization. There are so many ways that you can help your community, and if you need additional ideas, there are many references out there. http://handsonnetwork.org/our_network http://pointsoflight.org http://volunteerresource.org Good luck!

As a supervisor of volunteers for twelve years, I would advise you to choose a charity whose mission and history you can be proud of. There are so many charitable organizations who would love to have someone like you; you are honest and do your research. Think of the many missions you are interested in: homelessness, AIDS, developmental disabilities, joblessness, poverty, etc. Then, go to the links I have provided below, and look for a charity in your area whose mission supports the cause you are interested in. Both you and the charity will benefit more if you are wholeheartedly driven to one particular charity. The rewards are immense. Good luck!

Is the organization fundamentally flawed? Yes the Catholic Church has had alot of problems but they also do alot of good. If it's a red herring then stay away and don't be used. If it's a good organization that has had a few problems but is trying to do the right thing then helping will also help restore this organization to do more future good. Don't shoot the wounded helpers, only the evil ones.

If you feel that it will bring out the best in your community and contribute something of permanent value then yes, by all means help!
