Join the 40 hour work force or Join the Military?
-
Hey everyone. I am seriously in a tight squeeze. I am 19 yrs old and i Graduated June of 2009. Ok so my problem is..Should i join the 40 hour work force or join the military? I work at a Grocery Store called "Publix" Which is a great place to be to move up the branch and you can easily make 60k-100k with 4 bonuses a year including stock, and other helpful benefits once you hit the management area. My dad is really FOR the military. I don't mind the military but i am kinda scared to go in with the whole war in Iraq still going on. If anything i would join the Air force(Best out the bunch in my opinion) The Military offers amazing opportunities with college, pay with no bills, etc. Will i be able to survive in the work force with 40 hrs? and live on my own? But... They both sound tempting to me. I just don't know... I don't wanna make a bad decision. I dont wanna miss out on stuff. Please help me with any insight!? Thank you for any info!

Answer:
morally, you should work for the grocery store, not because you might get shot at by someone in iraq, but because you will most likely be shooting at innocent people in iraq, or if you are in the air force, dropping bombs over entire villages with civilians. however, it doesnt sound like you are too concerned about the civilians, and mostly concerned about yourself. if you dont mind killing innocent people, then the military is for you.

I think you should choose your path and not your dad... Both do sound like they have good benefits, so you should make a pros and cons list and see which one has more pros and go for that one.

Terry, You have to make this choice on your own or you may regret your decision down the road. I'll offer this. The Military is not a 40 hour a week job. It is a 24/7 comittment that often will have you away from home for long periods of time. Please do not make you decision based on the current wars as things change. There are many benefits to being in the Military and I would not have it any other way, I just don't want you to think that its all roses. Take your time and make an educated decision. Your Father will offer his guidance but he should not force you one way or the other. Best of Luck.

Think of it this way. Military= servitude and you can't just up and quit. You are contracted for however long you sign up for. You do what you are told when you are told and don't buck the system. The military also controls your life in the sense that you don't get to chose where you go and when you get to go home to see your family. If you get married there are things you have to pay for yourself. I see it as an honor to serve but honestly I have seen how ex-military are treated and it isnt always good. 100% of your college is not covered check with the VA. I used to work for them. You are allowed only so much per semester and you cover the rest. If you dont wanna fight in war dont join. Private sector= you can quit when you want and you have to find another job.You have more personal freedom. Unless there is a draft you have no fear of fighting overseas.

Go in the military, then go to college. You will have zero options if your "supermarket" thing doesn't work out. So get that college education man. Listen to your parents, they have made the mistakes already so you don't have to. Pay attention to them.

First, the war in Iraq is over. Second, the war in Afghanistan is ragging on, and we are in a tight fix over there with Obama not wanting to send in reinforcements, so you would be best to stay with Publix, at least until the war is over.

I say go into the military.
