Could I do volunteer work at 13 in the UK?
-
I'm a 13 year old girl and I live pretty much next to an old people's home. I have big aspirations in life and I understand that volunteer work can look very impressive on a curriculum vitae (CV). If I did ask if they had any volunteer work for me at the home, do you think they would let me? Also, I hear that Voluntary work is very rewarding, and I know that most of the old folks at the home never have any visitors. I'm musical so I could sing for them, or something. Insights, please? Thankyou :)

Answer:
I dont think you'd be able to help out in an old folks home, sorry. I think you have to have an insurance number or something, which you don't get until you're 16. i'm 15...and when i was14, i started to volunteer in a charity shop. Only some charity shops will allow this. For example: St Anns Hospice Charity shop say you have to be 16 to work in theirs cos of insurance. Oxfam will let you volunteer in theirs,. I volunteer in Barnardo's. It is very rewarding and actually great fun ;Dxx

It depends what type of voluntary work it is... unfortunately, you wouldn't be able to do voluntary work in a old people's home because you need a NIN (national insurance number) but you only get that when you are a 16 years old and to work with old people, you need to be CRB checked (and you are too young for that) and you need to be judged by the NCLP, but you need to be 18+.

I did about 6 months of volunteer work at a soup kitchen when i was 14 for my duke of Edinburgh award, me and my friend just went around churches asking and eventually found out about a local soup kitchen. All we had to do legally was have our parents sign a concent form the soup kitchen gave us so you should ask about that, oh and it is extremely rewarding regardless of awards or C.V looks, good luck

i dont know about 13 but ive heard of 14 year olds helping out :), and theres no harm in trying, if they see your interested they might want you when your older, if not try a charity shop i know they take on young kids in them places, and also i know for a fact theres a trust organisation in your school which bases on charity work and volunteering and one of the requirments is a talent like singing! good luck :) email me if you want to know more about the trust.
When my daughter looked into volunteering she was told she has to be 14. That was working with animals though but she said that she was told she had to be 14 to do volunteering in most places . There are sites that are especially for getting volunteering work. A good one is www.do-it.org.uk. Have a look on there and see if they can help you
