Hi William, you did not say where you live, so this is what information I can offer. Good Physical shape and specific courses. Almost all departments require fire fighters to be certified as emergency medical technicians. (For more information, see the section of the Handbook on emergency medical technicians and paramedics.) Although most fire departments require the lowest level of certification, Emergency Medical Technician-Basic (EMT-Basic), larger departments in major metropolitan areas increasingly require paramedic certification. Some departments include this training in the fire academy, whereas others prefer that recruits earn EMT certification on their own but will give them up to 1 year to do it. In addition to participating in training programs conducted by local fire departments, some fire fighters attend training sessions sponsored by the U.S. National Fire Academy. These training sessions cover topics such as executive development, anti-arson techniques, disaster preparedness, hazardous materials control, and public fire safety and education. Some States also have either voluntary or mandatory fire fighter training and certification programs. Many fire departments offer fire fighters incentives such as tuition reimbursement or higher pay for completing advanced training. Other qualifications. Applicants for municipal fire fighting jobs usually must pass a written exam; tests of strength, physical stamina, coordination, and agility; and a medical examination that includes a drug screening. Workers may be monitored on a random basis for drug use after accepting employment. Examinations are generally open to people who are at least 18 years of age and have a high school education or its equivalent. Those who receive the highest scores in all phases of testing have the best chances of being hired. Thank you hope this helps, sincere best of luck........K http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos158.htm#train%E2%80%A6

William - I think you are doing the right thing by going to school for the degree in fire science. Remember that physical fitness for firefighters is most important. Your life as a fire fighter depends on your fitness. There is a physical test involved with most fire departments. Most require - endurance fitness - running distances, lifting weight, climbing and problem solving. Openings do not become available very often. Many firefighters will work until retirement age. Learning first aid is also a plus - paramedics are part of the emergency services provided by fire departments. Good luck..

I would guess that you're having trouble finding any fire departments with openings right now since so many people who fight fires are volunteers. When openings do come up there seems to be alot of competition. I'm sure if you keep looking you'll eventually find places where you can apply for a paying firefighting job. Best of luck to you! --------- According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), www.bls.gov, volunteer firefighters make up 70 percent of fire companies http://education-portal.com/articles/Volunteer_Fireman:_Requirements_for_Volunteer_Firefighters.html But from the same website on another page: According to the BLS, www.bls.gov, the occupation of firefighter is projected to grow faster than the average for all occupations through the year 2014. The average firefighter earned $18.43 per hour in 2004. http://education-portal.com/articles/Fireman%3A_Firefighting_Job_Outlook_and_Career_Profile_of_a_Firefighter.html ------------ Mybe one of these sites could be of some assistance to you: http://www.firecareerassist.com/ http://www.fireserviceemployment.com/ http://www.firefighter-jobs.com/ http://www.firemenjobs.com/
