What does it take to work for unicef?

Do you find these UNICEF ads a little disconcerting?

  • Does every celebrity on E! work for unicef now? Do they get paid? Is that where the money is going? I know it sounds silly but I think it's even sillier that they are asking Americans who are barely staying above the povery lines in the US to give advice on saving the world. Yes - we all have iPods and Xboxes but if you take those away then we are a third world nation ourselves... What do you think?

  • Answer:

No, I don't! Personally, I think the reason that some celebrities are representing UNICEF is because they thought by doing so, it would raise awareness. And so what if a celebrity works with UNICEF? Just because they're a celebrity, they can't help people? And not every American is "barely staying above the povery lines in the US." (You meant poverty there, right?) There are many Americans who are very well off. And even though you or those barely above the line might not be doing great or don't have a lot, there ARE other people in the world who have even less, or nothing! 80% of the population in Haiti is actually UNDER the poverty line! Did you know that one dollar here is worth almost 8 times that in China? 45 times that in Haiti? 217 times that in Sudan? Have you been to any of these places? Do you even know what you're talking about? No one's asking you to "save the world." God forbid you help out someone less fortunate than yourself. And no- we do NOT all have iPods and Xboxes, and how is it if we take those away then we're a third world nation? Tell me, do you know what a third world nation is? Well, if you don't, I can assure you that if even if we don't have iPods and Xboxes, we're not one. That's what I think.

I do not give money to UNICEF, when the little kids are selling candies outside Walmart. Let's see, the money goes to the UN who turn around and pay off arms dealers and subverts everything that the USA has tried to do for the world.

I hope they aren't getting paid. They *are* getting promoted from it. I prefer to donate to local charities, because I do see enough poverty on the streets of NYC.

I don't know but I'm really getting sick of listening to the idea that most children are abused and starving. Especially when some of those children have run from homes because they don't like the word "no". I know it's not always the case but more so than people realize. Then you have the parents that have gone thru falsely documented child abuse cases and lost everything they own protecting the family plus the tax payers pay the rest. That's government constructed poverty right there.

GoodQuestion

I agree with everything you say. Good question. And why do they keep asking Americans? WE are the largest group of givers on the planet.

Baby Bloo

yes I do find them disconcerting. I also beleave that it's not really them asking the question. I know is all political which is sick.

Sara

That's a really good question. I really hope they're not, but you never know. Nowadays you can't trust anyone.

Yes, I find the Ads disconcerting. You are very right they need to help here in the US before heading off to save the world. I am thinking, they think it makes them look better if they are in a media blitz holding some rail thin little child from another country, like they are there to save the day. I also think celebrities need to think about what they are doing to our economy. They are spending thousands maybe millions to adopt children from other countries often (3rd world) i.e. Brad/Angelina. Meg Ryan, Madonna and helping these countries out, have they been living the high life for so long that it isn't hip to adopt an American child? They need their names in the paper so as to promote their up coming projects? I think everyone needs to take a good hard look at the lowering middle class, it is almost non existent, we are either POOR or RICH and nothing in between. The American people and economy need help, we are not the ones who should be putting band aids on every one else's mistakes.
