How to do charity work in india?

im going to india this summer and i really want to do some charity work there....maybe even start a charity. any suggestions on how to accomplish this and the time required to do this...thanks

Talk to an auditor ( Chartered Accountant or a CA ). You can start a charity, commonly called NGO (Non Governmental Organization). An NGO can be of 2 types. One is a "Society" and the other is "Trust" While the goals of both these are the same, the mechanism ( Legal and procedural ) are different. Your CA can help. Trust is some thing you do with few people and a society has larger members, typically. But the end is the same. Beware of receiving foreign funds. These need to be accounted for accurately. Foreign currency violations are punishable strictly in India. Though not intended, procedural violations can be very troublesome.
