Community service or volunteer work for teens?
-
I'm currently fourteen years old. I'm pretty much open for any kind of volunteer work. But I'm especially interested in tutoring, museum, and hospital related works. Any idea? Also, just curious. Do I get volunteer hours for volunteering outside of school? Because I need to apply for a program offered at school for academic leaders with volunteer experience. So it requires me to fill in all the volunteer work that I've done and I wasn't sure if I should write things that were not frorm like a club offered at a school.

I would recommend that you contact your local volunteer center. They can provide all sorts of one-time or short-term volunteer activities that match your interest and meet real community needs as well. Through my volunteer center, I tutor children at the local library, lead a group of teens to enhance visitor experience at the local natural history museum, package food at the local food bank, and a lot of other diverse projects. My volunteer center offers a youth volunteer leadership program in which our teen volunteers coordinate community-wide volunteer activities several times a year. They participate in a curriculum from the Points of Light Foundation. Check out your local volunteer center through the following links: http://www.handsonnetwork.org/our-network/ http://www.pointsoflight.org/centers/find_center.cfm I started out as a hospital volunteer as a teen, so here's a link to help you find your local hospital: http://www.ahd.com/ The other option is to try the local chapter of the United Way. They also specialize in volunteer placement: http://national.unitedway.org The volunteer time that you perform can be applied to a variety of things, for school and other activities. If you are looking for a specific type of job, or are interested in applying for other opportunities in the future, such as the Peace Corps, volunteer activity can count toward those applications as well. Good luck!

ALL of those place welcome volunteer work (schools, hospitals, & museums). And YES! you should include ANY volunteer work (school sponsored or not).

To answer your second question: You should be able to get volunteer hours for volunteering outside of school. Where I live this is the case. Volunteer work means volunteer anywhere, not just inside the school. However, the school probably has some form your "boss" will have to sign to confirm your volunteer hours. If not, then you may want to keep a general log of hours yourself. Anyhow, yes definitely include all volunteer work that you've already done. Since you've already done volunteer work maybe you can put together a resume. That'll help you get a volunteer job easier. Most microsoft word type documents have a resume template that you can modify. Or you can search online. To get to your first question. You can call local hospitals and ask if they allow volunteers your age. If so ask them what it takes to apply as a volunteer. You can do the same for museums. For tutoring you may be able to help at local elementary schools. Call and set up a meeting with the Principal and they'll let you know if it is possible. If it helps write down what you are going to say before you call so you can sound professional. Red cross also has related volunteer work. If you have any extra money you might want to get first aid trained, it'll make it easier for you to get any kind of position. Great you are into volunteering. We need more people like you in the world. Awesome!!!

Of course you can include outside club volunteer hours. You can goto a hospital and ask how to volunteer. They have many jobs that you can help out. Also Habitat for Humanity is a great way to volunteer too. it's also fun!
