Can I get SSI for A.D.D?

My friend died and I got custody of his 16 year old son can I get benifits for him from SSI?

  • My friend died 2 months ago, His ex-wife doesn't want the child and gave up custody to my wife and me. My friend and his son were on SSI benifits before he died. No one wanted this 16 year old boy so we took him in. Is there any way I can get some financial help to raise him from the State or the Federal Government? We will manage somehow but it would be great if we could get some help. The boy has to go to a therapist because he wa kidnapped at 9 years old for 3-1/2 years now add that to the death of his dad, well he will be in theraphy for a while. Could I get some help from the State? This poor kid has been through hell, we love him and will take care of him regardless. My wife is a school teacher and I'm partially disabled. If anyone knows anything to help us out let me know........Thanks Maynard

If the boy is 16 he is not legally yours unless you have been given guardian rights to raise him. If you have been than if he might be entitled to ssi. But if we was getting it before it was because of his father receiving it. Now that his father is dead, all of his fathers benefits might go to him until he turns 18. You need to go to ssi and ask him and go to childrens welfare and ask them. But be prepared for them to put him in foster care if you do not have any legal documents.
